Soil

Great soil is the basis of a productive garden. "Living" soil is full of microbes, organic matter, earthworms and other wigglers. It will grow large amounts of food in small spaces. Soil that is a fully functioning system will not require expensive fertilizers or pesticides. For an in-depth discussion of what makes up living soil, check out the link below.

Compost. The key to a high-producing garden. Most of your household waste can go into your garden via the compost bin.

Other organic ammendments can get you started while your compost is brewing: worm castings, chicken manure, bat guano, fish emulsion, rock dust. Free local green waste compost is available in many cities.
